- Consult an expert in forensic examination.
- Consult law enforcement to obtain authorization for a forensic sexual assault examination if applicable.

Consult an expert in forensic examination.  |
- If available, contact the local sexual assault response team.
- Ensure that all members of the sexual assault response team are activated, including the examiner (usually a sexual assault nurse examiner), a patients' advocate, and law enforcement.
- Consult an expert for guidance when an untrained physician must complete the forensic examination in a case where a forensic examiner is unavailable.
- For remote history that does not dictate an immediate examination, refer the patient to a mental health expert and advocate service for follow-up.

- Call the law enforcement agency where the crime occurred if state law requires law enforcement authorization before forensic examination.
- Request a current and appropriate evidence collection “kit” from law enforcement to gather appropriate samples.
