Educate patients about diagnostic work-up, management, psychological recovery, medical follow-up, and referral services for forensic matters. |
- Inform patients about:
- The limits of diagnostic evaluation to provide conclusive evidence and the path they can expect the evidence kit to follow after collection
- The purpose of any laboratory testing and the need for repeated testing if appropriate
- The purpose of the drug therapy
- The potential future psychological effects of sexual assault, including the concept of “flashbacks”
- Give patients written and verbal information about resources they will need to contact to obtain further medical follow-up and legal and advocate services.
- Provide hope by informing patients that most sexual assault survivors are able to move past the event and rebuild their lives.
