  • Assess the risk of a traveler acquiring dengue by:
    • Reviewing the individual's travel itinerary for the destination, type of trip, type of accommodations, season, and duration
    • Consulting updated travel medicine resources for the geographic distribution of dengue

Recognize that the principal approach to the prevention of dengue is mosquito avoidance.B

  • Emphasize the importance of mosquito avoidance and repellent measures in the prevention of dengue.
  • Advise travelers to minimize mosquito bites by:
    • Wearing clothes that cover as much skin as possible, such as trousers and long-sleeved shirts
    • Wearing permethrin-treated clothing
    • Appropriate use of DEET-containing insect repellents on all exposed skin
    • Staying in housing with well-screened areas cleared of mosquitoes
    • Refraining from outdoor activity during peak Aedes biting times
    • Reducing mosquito breeding places in and around the living area, including flower vases and uncovered water containers, if the stay is extended
