Educate travelers about the etiology, clinical manifestations, management, and prognosis of dengue.C

  • Inform patients that:
    • Dengue is transmitted by mosquito bites that can be unapparent or even go unnoticed
    • Signs and symptoms of dengue fever can mimic a number of different viral diseases
    • Although dengue often presents initially with fever and flu-like symptoms, it can evolve rapidly into a life-threatening disease
    • It is very important to seek medical attention as soon as possible
    • Management of severe dengue requires admission to an ICU for treatment and monitoring and may require major interventions, such as blood transfusion, mechanical ventilation, and hemodialysis
    • An episode of dengue does not make them immune to further episodes of disease, and appropriate preventive measures should be followed during future travel to a dengue-endemic region
    • Data on prognosis come primarily from resource-poor settings in Asia and Africa, and the prognosis may be better when patients are treated in modern ICUs
