Consultation for Management

Consult specialists in infectious diseases and other services as appropriate. BC

  • Consider consultation with:
    • Infectious diseases specialists early to help manage patients who present with a travel history and clinical presentation suggesting either severe malaria or bacterial sepsis
    • Pharmacy services to help with rapid acquisition and preparation of quinidine and for advice on its safe administration
    • Cardiology specialists to assist in the administration of quinidine to patients with known cardiac conduction abnormalities or in whom quinidine administration prolongs the corrected QT interval
    • Neurology specialists for the management of recurrent or therapy-refractory seizures or to confirm clinically suspected nonconvulsive status epilepticus by electroencephalography
    • Renal specialists for hemodialysis management of acid-base disturbances or volume overload
    • Hematology services to prepare for the use of exchange transfusion in patients who meet WHO criteria
  • If specialist consultation is not readily available, direct questions about the management of malaria to the CDC Malaria Hotline (770-488-7788) at any hour.
