Consider consultation to establish a diagnosis in patients with an undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis, especially if specialized procedures are required. C

  • Consider consultation with a rheumatologist or orthopedist in patients with an undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis if:
    • A careful physical exam by an experienced observer is required to distinguish joint involvement from overlying cellulitis
    • Arthrocentesis is required but is difficult to perform because of lack of expertise in the procedure or because the anatomy is obscured
    • Expertise is required in using a polarized microscope to examine synovial fluid for crystals
