 |
Consider consultation to establish a diagnosis in patients with an undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis, especially if specialized procedures are required. |
- Consider consultation with a rheumatologist or orthopedist in patients with an undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis if:
- A careful physical exam by an experienced observer is required to distinguish joint involvement from overlying cellulitis
- Arthrocentesis is required but is difficult to perform because of lack of expertise in the procedure or because the anatomy is obscured
- Expertise is required in using a polarized microscope to examine synovial fluid for crystals
