Rationale:

  • Chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema, and fungal infections increase the risk of cellulitis.

Evidence:

  • The risk of cellulitis is increased >20-fold in patients with fungal infections of the toes, particularly the areas between the toes (17; 161; 162).
  • Chronic venous insufficiency caused by recurrent deep vein thrombophlebitis of the lower extremity or chronic lymphedema of an extremity also increases the risk of cellulitis (161).
  • Oral selenium reduces recurrence rates of erysipelas due to lymphedema (90).

Comments:

  • Recurrent cellulitis may cause impairment of lymphatic drainage (21).
