Rationale:
- Infectious diseases subspecialists have expertise in antimicrobial treatment and are familiar with the patterns of antibiotic
resistance among bacteria causing soft tissue infections.
|
|
Evidence:
- More appropriate treatment was ordered initially by a consulting infectious diseases specialist (78%) than without such consultation
(54%). Following the availability of culture results, appropriate treatment increased to 97% and 89% respectively (130).
- Involvement of an infectious diseases specialist in a hospital antimicrobial stewardship program resulted in more appropriate
and cost-effective use of antimicrobial agents (131).
