Rationale:

  • PTSD is not the only adverse psychological outcome of traumatic events.

Evidence:

  • The comorbidity of PTSD with mood, anxiety, and substance-related disorders is 30% or more. Rates of interpersonal violence also are higher among individuals exposed to traumatic stressors (2; 7; 8; 9).

Comments:

  • A systematic approach is needed to assess the full range of psychiatric symptoms that may follow a traumatic stressor. Assessment can be done efficiently and will ensure that effective treatment is rendered.
