Rationale:

  • PTSD does not usually require inpatient treatment, but patients with PTSD may develop suicidal ideation or aggressive impulses toward others.
  • Some patients with PTSD may be functionally impaired to the extent that hospitalization is needed.

Evidence:

  • Suicidal and homicidal ideation and behaviors develop in patients with PTSD. These are more common in the face of stressors that exacerbate PTSD (e.g., trauma reminders) and when PTSD coexists with other psychiatric disorders (e.g., depression) or chronic, debilitating medical conditions (17).

Comments:

  • None.
