Rationale:

  • Patients with PTSD often present to primary care providers with somatic complaints.

Evidence:

  • A number of studies using different methodologies have found that most patients with mood and anxiety disorders present to primary care clinicians with primarily, or even exclusively, physical symptoms. In one study that included patients with PTSD (13), more than 80% presented with a medically unexplained physical symptom.

Comments:

  • Somatic complaints may include specific PTSD symptoms (e.g., insomnia) vague, generalized symptoms (e.g., fatigue, chronic pain), and unexplained visceral symptoms common to all anxiety disorders (e.g., chest pain, dyspepsia).
