Screening

Obtain a fasting plasma glucose level or alternative test to screen for type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients with selected comorbidities or risk factors for the disease. BC

  • Screen all adults with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease for diabetes.
  • Consider screening for diabetes in adults with risk factors for type 2 diabetes, such as family history of diabetes, obesity, gestational diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, or membership in high-risk ethnic groups.
  • Do not screen for diabetes in adults without risk factors for cardiovascular disease or risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
  • Do not conduct routine screening for secondary causes of diabetes unless suggestive signs or symptoms of certain diseases are present.
