Consider consultation with an appropriate specialist to investigate and coordinate systemic work-up of medical associations of conjunctivitis. C

  • Consider consultation with an internist, infectious disease specialist, neurologist, rheumatologist, or allergist in diagnosing systemic disease with ocular manifestations (or vice versa) that may require broad-based therapy and the following studies:
    • CBC, sedimentation rate, rheumatoid factor, ANCA, ANA, chest x-ray, RPR, and Lyme titer recommended as initial workup for scleritis
    • Cervical smears or urethral swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhea
    • VDRL and RPR for syphilis
    • Chest x-ray, ACE, and serum lysozyme for sarcoid
