Base advice to patients who have had exertional heatstroke on the results of a heat tolerance test.  |
- Defer all exercise until a heat tolerance test is performed.
- Maintain proper modification of activities to include adequate rest and avoid dehydration.
- Train only in proper climatic conditions.
- Train only when properly hydrated.
- Verify proper acclimation to environmental conditions.
- Refrain from training when ill, especially with diarrhea or a flu-like illness.
- If the patient is heat intolerant, advise against strenous physical activities especially under hot environmental conditions.

- Determine the socioeconomic status of the patient to establish need for intervention.
- Marshal social service support with emphasis on providing an air-conditioned environment if needed.
- Explain the danger of long periods of heat exposure in non-air-conditioned environment.
- Treat underlying comorbid illness, e.g., diabetes, alcoholism, as required.
