Base advice to patients who have had exertional heatstroke on the results of a heat tolerance test. C

  • Defer all exercise until a heat tolerance test is performed.
  • Maintain proper modification of activities to include adequate rest and avoid dehydration.
  • Train only in proper climatic conditions.
  • Train only when properly hydrated.
  • Verify proper acclimation to environmental conditions.
  • Refrain from training when ill, especially with diarrhea or a flu-like illness.
  • If the patient is heat intolerant, advise against strenous physical activities especially under hot environmental conditions.

  • Determine the socioeconomic status of the patient to establish need for intervention.
  • Marshal social service support with emphasis on providing an air-conditioned environment if needed.
  • Explain the danger of long periods of heat exposure in non-air-conditioned environment.
  • Treat underlying comorbid illness, e.g., diabetes, alcoholism, as required.
