Rationale:

  • Patients recovering from WNV infection have a relatively high incidence of movement disorders and subjective cognitive difficulty, the duration of which remains unknown.

Evidence:

  • Gait and movement disorders persisted in six of 39 patients in a community-based, prospective series in Louisiana in 2002 (30).
  • Ataxia, weakness, and cognitive dysfunction were persistent problems for survivors of encephalitis or other neuroinvasive syndromes in a Canadian series of 57 patients in 2002 (29).

Comments:

  • Patients with paralysis may need referral to a physiatrist and/or physical therapist for rehabilitation.
