Rationale:

  • Patients with WNV encephalitis may have fluid and electrolyte derangements, including cerebral edema.
  • Patients with WNV encephalitis may have respiratory insufficiency and/or cerebral edema.
  • Patients with acute flaccid paralysis may develop respiratory failure. The presence of early dysarthria and dysphagia are warning signs for possible respiratory failure.
