Know that smoking cessation during the first trimester of pregnancy can substantially reduce health costs by contributing to a decrease in preterm births and that smoking cessation throughout pregnancy can reduce costs due to maternal illness.B

Evidence:

  • A U.S. study of the direct medical costs of low birth weight due to maternal smoking estimated the cost per live birth for each maternal smoker to be $511, a total cost of $263 million. The study estimated that a reduction of maternal smoking by 1% would save $572 million over 7 years (81).
  • An economic analysis determined that smoking costs per year (1993) due to the effect on maternal health were $135 to $167 million (82).
